TVEL and NRNU MEPhI present the joint Master’s programme on decommissioning of nuclear installations

ROSATOM Fuel Company TVEL and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI held an online presentation of the joint Master’s programme ‘Technologies for the decommissioning of nuclear energy installations’.

Representatives of the Fuel Company TVEL talked about the decommissioning of nuclear energy facilities market in Russia and abroad, as well as about existing tasks and ambitious plans in this market. Whereas members of the National Research University NRNU MEPhI explained the structure of the Master’s degree programme and the specifics of future specialists training.

In 2019, by the State Corporation ROSATOM decision the TVEL was designated as an industry integrator in the business area “Decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities, including NPP reactor island, that includes internals of the nuclear plant primary system, as well as the related radioactive waste management”. In 2020, the joint Master’s programme of TVEL and NRNU MEPhI was established with the aim of training engineering and technical personnel for the implementation of the projects for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities at various stages of their life cycle.

According to expert assessment, the decommissioning of nuclear facilities is one of the prospective markets of the global nuclear industry, which will be challenged with constant needs for training of highly qualified personnel. The first-generation nuclear facilities created at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s have already exhausted their resource and are currently either being decommissioned or stopped for subsequent withdrawal. By 2050, decommissioning work will be carried out at more than 1200 nuclear facilities on all continents.

Students of NRNU MEPhI studying under the Joint Master’s programme with TVEL will undergo practical training at the enterprises of the State Corporation ROSATOM. Lectures and seminars are also held with involvement of representatives of field-oriented enterprises. Graduates of the Programme will become in-demand sought-after specialists on various projects in Russia and abroad and will also have high chances of employment in the ROSATOM Fuel Company TVEL or at its enterprises.

The Master’s programme is implemented within the framework of the area 14.04.02 ‘Nuclear Physics and Technologies’. In 2021, 120 state-funded places have been allocated for this area. You can submit documents until July 31, 2021, through the NRNU MEPhI information system.
